Meet The Principal

Mrs. Julie Perdue

They say the third time’s a charm.  For me, the first, the second, and the third time have all been charms or gems to me.  I was a student and graduate of St. Bernard; a teacher here for 8 years; and I’m now the principal.

There’s no other school where I would want to do this job.  St. Bernard is home to me and this community is family.  I look after each of our students and staff as if they were a member of my family.

My goal as an educator has always been to make education and learning fun; and to create a school community that both students and staff look forward to being a part of each day.  When accepting the position as principal in the spring of 2019, my first goal as principal was to get St. Bernard through the pandemic with each school day and our school year being as normal as it possibly could be.

This year and each year following, my goal will be for us to continue our mission of education and supporting the development of the whole child.  We will not only offer a top notch academic program, but a program that supports the social emotional learning and the spiritual development of each child in a building where all students feel supported, successful, and cared for each day.

I believe that it takes a community to raise a child.  We, at St. Bernard, believe that we are partners in education your child/ren.  Our Administrative team and teachers encourage a working relationship with parents/guardians in providing the best possible learning environment for all students.  Regular communication and meetings are set to review progress and create a plan for on-going success and growth.

With the assistance of government funding and our parish Capital Campaign, we are in the process of purchasing top notch technology, constructing a pavilion for outdoor learning, making updates to our playgrounds for students of all ages, providing all campus buildings with new HVAC systems to keep students ands staff comfortable in any weather; and doing a remodel of our early childhood building.

Thank you for considering St. Bernard!  Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

God Bless,

Julie Perdue

Our Mission

St. Bernard Catholic School community provides a caring, Christian environment, with strong academics, incorporating differentiated instruction, in which all students flourish. We create a nurturing atmosphere where students grow into responsible, peace-building disciples, and life-long learners.

Our Vision

St. Bernard Catholic School is a Christian community that is committed to excellence. We develop the potential of all learners by offering an academically rigorous, effective, and differentiated curriculum as an entitlement to all. Our program emphasizes Catholic/Christian values by having students utilize faith based principles that they put into practice daily. Through prayer, liturgy, service opportunities, and strong Catholic faith based “roots”; students are prepared to take their place in a diversified society.

Our Precept

I am a part of St. Bernard Catholic School where we treat each other with the care and respect that God asks of us.  At St. Bernard we grow into confident life long learners.

St. Bernard Catholic School

Our Philosophy

As a ministry within the Parish, Saint Bernard Catholic School participates in the Ministry of the Word of the Church. Saint Bernard School has a unique role in the formation and education of students and seeks the partnership of parent(s)/guardian(s) parishioners, school personnel, and students in this endeavor. As members of the teaching ministry of the Church, the faculty and staff give witness to their faith and seek to grow together as a Community of Faith.

Saint Bernard Catholic School applauds diversity in teaching styles and holds that effective teaching and learning rests upon the recognition of the unique talents and learning styles of each individual. Our goal is to place each student in the learning environment best suited to his or her learning capability.

Saint Bernard Catholic School’s philosophy is rooted in the directives of the United States Bishops who state:

Catholic Schools are to be communities of Faith in which the Christian message, the experience of community, worship, and social concern are integrated in the total experience of students, their parent(s)/legal guardian(s), and members of the faculty. (NCD 9)

Saint Bernard Catholic School’s philosophy also reflects the goal of the Archbishop of Louisville who states:

…that we continue to nurture and spread an educational heritage reflecting the dual goals of religious formation and civic responsibility. We seek to teach the child to think and act morally, with a profound respect for the created universe, and Christian love and active concern for all persons.

Saint Bernard Catholic School provides a Christian environment recognizing our intrinsic worth and value as Children of God. Students are encouraged to develop self-discipline with thoughtfully chosen behaviors. Saint Bernard School strives to provide a safe and orderly structure in which creative learning takes place.

Students, faculty, and staff respond to their call of faith to be people of prayer, people who develop their talents and abilities for the common good, and people dedicated to daily living by reflecting spiritual action in all areas of life and service.

Our History

Since 1963

1963
Archbishop John A. Floersh announced plans for the establishment of a new parish in southeastern Jefferson County. This new Parish would be called St. Bernard, named for the patron Saint of its first Pastor, Father Joseph Bernard Glick.
1964
Amidst a community of some two hundred families, ground was broken on March 15, 1964, and the corner stone set on July 5th. Daily Mass was held in the rectory basement; Sunday Mass was held at St. Gabriel until the church was finished. On October 18, 1964, the first parish Mass was held in the new church.
1969
In 1969 the annex to the school was added to meet the demands for more classroom space in the rapidly growing community. The Ursuline Sisters of Mount St. Joseph, Maple Mount, Kentucky along with a staff of lay teachers and staff have provided a quality Catholic education for students of St. Bernard.
1975-1992
In response to the Second Vatican Council, renovation to the Church was done in the spring of 1975. In 1978 the Parish Hall was built. In 1990, St. Bernard began housing the Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries Adult Day Care Center. In 1992, the Church was renovated again.
1996-Present
Initiated our “Build for Tomorrow” campaign to raise funds to add a new building to our campus to accommodate more classrooms, meeting space and a commons area for our growing needs. Our Education and Formation Center was finished in August 1997. In the spring of 2008, Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries moved into their new facilities on Beulah Church Road. The area previously used for their Adult Day Care Center was renovated to make room for our preschool classes, as well as our after-school care program. Our Parish Annex was used for additional offices, meeting rooms, and youth space.
